urban beekeeping.

I got my bees!!!
First I got the topbar hive from Walter T. Kelly.
We had a package & put them in last Monday, it went flawlessly.
On Saturday, Sam went with me to pick up my two nucs from the farmer Mark.
We put the bees in their new home & now they seem so happy.
We even tasted a little honey--delicious.
I wanted to take a picture of the inside of the topbar hive because it was so unique.
I took my gloves off & stuck my hand inside the hive--yep, I got stung (but only once & with good reason).
I'm having so much fun.
I'm loving the bees.

flight of the frenchies

This looks too fun!
I have a serious fear of heights--I have a feeling doing something like this would help me get over that.

I just listened to an awesome podcast from The Dirtbag Diaries.
It inspired me to add one more thing to my to-do list:
Go on an epic backcountry ice skating trip in the high Sierra.
Live it up!

soap.

i spent last night learning how to make homemade goat milk soap with wood ash lye with my sweet friend Bekah
the night was filled with learning.
we used frontierfreedom.com for tips.
so basically if you don't know much about lye--just be aware it's dangerous & crazy.
Bekah made her own lye out of apple tree wood ashes (yes that chick is awesome).
we found out that she didn't make enough so round two of goat milk soap making will happen soon when more lye is made.
we had so much fun learning & wearing her kitchen towels as bandanas around our faces so we wouldn't breathe in lye fumes.
i felt like a scientist.
here is a little explanation about lye:
Wood Ash Lye vs. Commercial Lye
homemade lye is Potassium Hydroxide and can be made rather simply at home from wood ashes--Potassium Hydroxide makes a softer soap, so the fat or oils used will need to be beef tallow (beef fat) or even lard (pig fat).
commercial lye is Sodium Hydroxide, which is much more complex to manufacture, and is often used in drain openers. In order for commercial lye to work properly in soap, it must be pure Sodium Hydroxide, which is becoming difficult to find in grocery stores.
Making Lye
begin with a 5 gallon bucket of rain water. while nature and gravity  work together to provide soft water, grab an old pillow case and fill it with wood ashes.
place the pillow case full of ashes in a separate 5 gallon bucket.
boil about a gallon of rainwater. with the pillowcase stretched open to the same size as the bucket, pour the boiling hot rain water into the ashes. boil more rain water and repeat this process until the ashes are completely covered. with the hot water covering the ashes, close the pillow case and lift and lower the pillowcase in and out of the water, like making tea.
this dipping process continues for some time --- about one and a half hours. lift the pillow case out of the bucket, strain it, and pour the water into your pan.
cook the contents of the pan, which contain water and lye(Potassium Hydroxide).
the reason for cooking this mixture instead of going straight to combining it with the fat is to boil the water away so that you could use the lye faster.
occasionally, check the strength of the mixture with a chicken feather. the rule is, the lye is strong enough to make soap when a chicken feather begins to dissolve in the solution.
continue to boil the mixture down to almost nothing. be careful when the level of liquid gets low, as you can scorch the lye.

The List

I thought it would be fun to make a list of things I love so you can get to know me a little better. The idea was good but then when I got down to making an actual list it was kind of hard. I don't really like "things" as much as I like experiences & moments. So here is a short list with a few things & activities I like with some dreams of mine thrown in there.

Every morning I start it off right--coffee.

My favorite meal is breakfast & my favorite thing to wear is a nice pair wool socks.

Smart wool or Wigwam are a must.

The goal is to have land someday.

I would love to have lamb & use their wool to make my own socks.
Just a dream.

I live off of cottage cheese.

It is essential to my daily routine.
The first chicken I was ever given was a Rhode Island Red.
 I named her Posie.

I never thought I would get a rooster but I am glad I did.
 I like him.
His name is Juicer.

My favorite thing to do is garden. I hope to have one like this someday.

Greenhouses are the best.

Harvesting what you grow is so rewarding.

Tomatoes are my favorite thing to grow & eat.

Bees are my next project.

Langstroth.

Raw honey.

The best Kentucky honey is Hosey Honey-it helps fight allergies.

I love beer & the Louisville Beer Store has so many good choices.

Dogfish Head is best.

Cheese is a huge part of my diet.

Capriole goat cheese is a must.
It's local y'all!

Goats!
I hope to make cheese from their milk!

Frye boots--I wear them all the time.
They are the most durable & comfortable shoes I own.

I am a sucker for thrifted flannel shirts.
They are one of my go to comforts.

S'mores & campfires are two of my favorite things.

Kayaking on the Puget Sound.

Hiking with friends at the Gorge is a regular event.
This is my amazing friend Morgan looking like a prAna model.

I could hike everyday.
This is in Montana in Glacier National Park.

The only hiking boots I'll ever wear.
My feet have never been happier than when I am wearing my Keen boots on a long excursion.
This was taken in the Grand Tetons on Jackson Lake.
I am an avid NPR listener & Radio Lab is by far the best show on the air.
I have listened to every episode ever produced & it brings me so much joy.
Thank you Jad Abumrad & Robert Krulwich.

I am obsessed with local food!
I try to eat seasonally and support our amazing farm to table restaurants.

Harvest is one of the best.
I normally go to dinner there but they do serve a mean sunday brunch!

Rye on Market is a new place & it has been surprisingly delightful. I've already been there three times & I can't enough of their delicious food. I highly recommend their fried chicken & their dark & stormy.

All of these places are amazing.
I could go on & on but maybe I'll save that for another blog post.

Saving the best for last!
Ben is definitely number one on my favorite's list.

While doing this post I realized there are so many things I love so I will definitely be doing another list sometime in the near future.

ps- I took some of the pictures on this post but I also pulled several of them from the internet & I do not know the source, sorry about that.
