barefoot farmer

On Saturday we got to go learn from the Barefoot Farmer, Jeff Poppen!
If you know me, you know I love all things gardening.
Not only did Jeff feed my science brain by talking about chemistry & biology
but he emphasized the importance of organic gardening,
something that's been a conviction of mine for the past 6 years.
I was reminded of the importance of calcium in my soil
& educated on how vital fungi & bacteria are in the life of a plant.
The earth is amazing!!!
Thank you Foxhollow Farm for hosting this baller
event & Jeff you're simply incredible.

cheese.

Last year I had the privilege of visiting the farm
where my favorite cheese is made, Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese.
I've always dreamed of making my own artisan cheese & Kenny's
was the best place to learn what really goes into making good, raw cheese.
His story is inspirational & I was so encouraged to see a man truly love his work.

happiness.

Over the long weekend I went to Texas to visit the beautiful Em Loerke!
It was my first time to visit Dallas & everything about it was perfect.
We ate ridiculously tasty food at Velvet Taco.
Walked along the water while we watched sailboats & runners.
Grubbed on pizza & beer at Eno's while we laughed about trail magic.
Stayed up way too late talking & catching up.
Bought goodies at Central Market.
She took me to The Ranch--the most perfect getaway 30 minutes outside of the city.
We fed the horses, Hank & Skinny Jimmy.
Climbed up a windmill.
Cooked hotdogs & corn over a fire.
Too many good things.
I'm so happy & thankful.

beekeeping adventures

last night Bekah & I decided to open up a hive that hadn't been touched in 4 years.
we initially wanted to split the hive.
when we opened the honey super there were thousands of bees in it & what looked to be queen activity.
yes, we got stung.
yes, we are crazy.
yes, i wore shorts (so smart).
we ended up leaving the 2 deep brood boxes and just hauled the shallow super.
the rest of the split will happen another time.
i've never had such an adrenaline rush!
it was one of the best & most hilarious nights.
thanks Bekah for being awesome.

antibiotics

"Farmers and ranchers will for the first time need a prescription from a veterinarian before using antibiotics in farm animals, in hopes that more judicious use of the drugs will reduce the tens of thousands of human deaths that result each year from the drugs’ overuse."
this is a good thing.
it is one small step in the right direction and for that i am thankful.

endeavor

endeavor

endeavor: an attempt to achieve a goal.
a few weeks ago i shot this video.
i spent the day with my friend Bekah.
we went & picked up her bees.
after the bee pick up we went & got her two goats--Lady & Banjo.
it was a beautiful day & i will remember it forever.

Homeland
Endeavor is the first of a series of short films.
I created Homeland to inspire.
I want to show things from the land, people, beauty, food, & community.
I want to take things back to our roots.

Yesterday I woke up early to go with my friend Bekah (she has a great blog read it here) to pick up her bees & goats. We hopped in the truck & headed east. Once we picked up the bees we continued going east and picked up her goats (Lady & Banjo). We went to her farm & set up the hives. It was the most peaceful experience--I know what you're thinking--peaceful? But it truly was. We didn't get stung and there were thousands of bees flying around our heads. We milked Lady. Once we finished all of that we got really hungry so we killed her rooster Rocky & cooked him up for dinner. It was the craziest & best day. We had so much fun--everything from good conversation in the car, beekeeping, goat milking, to chicken killing & laughing around a lovely campfire.
