wallflower.

We saw this movie last week. I found it to be the best film I've seen all year, and a touching story on top of that.
It had everything from realistic expectations of high school and comic relief, to a depiction of true friendship found in the
common ground of being an outsider and honesty about the darkest of life experiences.
I was blown away by the acting and the portrayal of normal high schoolers identifying with one another across
the boundaries of age, sex, style, and even musical preference.
It also had a healthy dose of all things 90s.

allen konigsberg.

“We're all faced throughout our lives with agonizing decisions, moral choices.
Some are on a grand scale, most of these choices are on lesser points.
But we define ourselves by the choices we have made.
We are, in fact, the sum total of our choices.
Events unfold so unpredictably, so unfairly, human
happiness does not seem to be included in the design of creation.
It is only we, with our capacity to love that give meaning to the indifferent universe.
And yet, most human beings seem to have the ability to keep trying
and even try to find joy from simple things, like their family, their work,
and from the hope that future generations might understand more”
-Woody Allen.

olympian

Ray Ewry
The Opening Ceremonies of the London 2012 Summer Olympics are today & this story inspired me.
Ray Ewry won eight Olympic gold medals in 1900, 1904 and 1908, yet he is almost unknown today because his unprecedented feats were performed in events that are no longer held: the standing high jump, the standing long jump and the standing triple jump.
Born 14 October 1873, Ewry contracted polio as a young boy. Confined to a wheelchair, it was thought that he might be paralysed for life. However, he began exercising on his own and grew up to be a superb athlete.
Ewry won all three standing jump events at the 1900 Olympics in Paris. He defended all three titles in 1904. The standing triple jump was dropped from the Olympic program in 1908, but Ewry won both the standing high jump and the standing long jump for a third time. All standing jumps were dropped from the Olympics after 1912.

guiding goddess.

This week I keep reading about the Everest summits.
It is so inspiring & encouraging to see people push their limits in the best possible way.
I decided to do a little research on some of the climbers & to my surprise, I found The Melissa Arnot.
My mind is blown.
Arnot was raised just outside Glacier National Park in Whitefish, Montana.
After college, she began living out of her car to save money and climb mountains.
She first climbed Mt. Rainier in 2001 and called it a “watershed moment.”
Melissa began teaching wilderness medicine in 2002 and began guiding on Mt. Rainier with Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. in 2004.
By 2006 she was a lead guide & now she has summited Rainier more than 70 times.
In 2008, she joined Jeff Dossett and David Morton on the Everest Team Inspi(RED) to promote HIV/AIDs
Her passions for climbing, teaching, and taking care of others have taken her all over the world
helping people test their limits in the safest way possible, while still having fun.
STATS:
73 summits of Mt. Rainier (14,410')
1 expedition on Mt. McKinley (20,320')
2 Expeditions on Cotopaxi, Ecuador (19,348')
2 Expeditions on Cayambe, Ecuador (18,997')
2 Expeditions to Aconcagua, Argentina (22,841')
3 Summits of Mt. Everest (29,029'), (South Col route)

harrison.

when I first met Ben I thought he looked like Harrison Ford--the American Grafitti version--now as he grows & changes (mainly the addition of the scruff & the fact that he's no longer the 18 year old boy I first knew) he reminds me of Indiana Jones.
I came across this old photo of Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones & it made me smile.
I love my Indy.
